UNDERGROUND JUSTICE AND HANDMADE LUCK

i’ve been sick all week with some kind of devil-cold. i felt it creeping in on monday morning, but tried to ignore it, hoping it might go away. i tried to just take my vitamins, drink lots of tea and water, and hope for the best, but i didn’t stand a chance. aside from going to work, i haven’t really left my bed, except once in a while to bundle up on the couch for movie-watching. but mostly i’ve been knitting socks for myself, listening to audio books (this week, girl with the pearl earring and anne of green gables) and reading too brief a treat: the letters of truman capote.

the socks i’m knitting for myself are made combining two different patterns. i’m using the basic sock recipe from stephanie pearl-mcphee and the men’s socks from the purl bee, and sort of combining elements of both of them to make menswear-style socks using sock yarn in a women’s size. i’m just finishing up the toe on the second sock, and then i’ll photograph them and post my modifications. but i think they’re going to be really good. they’re soft and woolly and warm, which is the best kind of thing to be knitting when you’re lying around sick all week and in need of things that are comforting.

too brief a treat is also helping me through this icky time. i’ve always really liked truman capote’s writing, but his letters are seriously so good. i wish i lived in the 1950s and that we were friends. like bestfriends. reading his letters is like reading a celebrity/literary gossip column from the past. it’s so weird to think about being a young person and just like hanging out with greta garbo and tennessee williams, and then also saying catty things about them. truman could have said whatever catty things he wanted about me. no joke. i’m only halfway through it though – i know that things are going to get a bit more depressing in a while, but i still am so into this book.

my plan for the rest of tonight is to get new audio books and not leave my bedroom until  tomorrow. hopefully when i reemerge, i’ll be feeling a little bit more like a human. and then maybe i’ll finally get around to listing new things on etsy. i have so so many things to put up.
